Job Summary: 

Position is primarily responsible for overseeing the Life Enrichment department which is charged with developing, coordinating, and promoting creativity and life enhancing programs and events for residents throughout the continuum. This department includes but is not limited to volunteer recruitment and management (internal and external), events for Residential Living, arts and cultural education and enrichment programs throughout the continuum, physical fitness, and overseeing Beauty Salon consulting. This department ensures regulatory compliance for activities in Health Care and Assisted Living, establishes policies and procedures and department budget, monitors departmental performance, and is responsible for developing and implementing a total program of activities (individually and community wide) to stimulate creativity among residents and staff.

Areas of Responsibility:

Program Development:

  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulations for Department of Health and Department of Social Services.
  • Oversees the production of the newsletter and other communications including the “in-house” information line
  • Ensures compliance with the volunteer policy including background and reference checks, orientation, and supervision. Keeps volunteer program policy up-to-date to ensure compliance with current regulations.
  • Oversees Fitness and Wellness program to include Fitness Center, swimming pool accessibility, and applicable fitness programs 
  • Oversees Creative Art program responsible for providing meaningful and creativity-enhancing experiences for residents.
  • Supervises program arrangements to ensure room, audiovisual, and other needed or requested equipment are reserved and in proper working order to meet resident and staff needs.
  • Serves as a liaison with community services by coordinating and overseeing community services programs and conferences. Promotes TVA actively to the larger Northern Virginia and DC community to show creativity and vitality of aging cohorts among professional and civic communities.
  • Ensures procedures for planned activities outside of community are appropriate. Monitors the collection of payments, transportation and ticket arrangements, processing deposits and check requests, accompanying residents on trips (may be delegated to appropriate staff and/or volunteers), and developing trip lists and other correspondence.
  • Actively solicits and responds to residents’ requests for activities, workshops, and special events.
    • Acts as a liaison (or through designee) between department and residents for Resident Committees including but not limited to Resident Activities committee.

Budgetary, Financial, and Statistic Responsibility:

  • Prepares and submits budgetary and financial compliance information to the Executive Director as requested.
  • Ensures payroll information is accurate and timely.
  • Oversees and coordinates ordering, purchasing, and maintaining of supplies and equipment needed for department.
  • Maintains statistical data of the department to justify and enhance programing for residents in arts, fitness, and activities.

Qualifications:

  • Must meet at least one of the following qualifications:
    • Be a qualified therapeutic recreation specialist or an activities professional.
    • Be eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist or activities professional by a recognized accrediting body.
    • Have one year of full-time experience, within the last five years, in a patient activities program in a health care setting.
    • Be a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant; or
    • Have completed 40 hours training in group activities and recognizing and assessing the activity needs of residents.
  • Degree preferred from an accredited college or university or equivalent professional level work experience.
  • Minimum of four years progressively responsible experience in event planning or other recreational field required.
  • Five or more years previous supervisory experience required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Must be proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite, Teams, etc.
